Social Media Graphics System for Mothership
Technical engineering and performance optimization of 8 MOGRT templates for a digital media giant with over 1 million followers.
Project Overview
Mothership, a major Asian digital news resource with a massive social media presence, approached me to completely revamp and modernize the motion graphics for their social media video content.
The scope of the project involved building a comprehensive toolkit of 8 motion graphics templates (MOGRTs). The package fully covers all the client's graphic needs, ranging from complex text blocks and headlines to minor on-screen elements, social call-to-actions, and info-cards.
The Role: Design & Template Development
The client provided clear creative direction, brand guidelines, and initial layouts, while the final visual execution was developed collaboratively throughout the project.
My work included refining graphic designs, creating animation systems, exploring alternative visual approaches, and transforming the approved concepts into flexible, editor-friendly MOGRT templates for Premiere Pro.
Over-Engineering vs. Performance
This was a highly intensive project that required more than 20 rounds of revisions and several complete redesigns from scratch.
The biggest breakthrough occurred during production testing: after delivering the initial, visually complex templates, the client’s internal video editors reported that the files were too resource-heavy and sluggish to edit efficiently on their systems.
To solve this, I had to completely re-engineer the templates from the ground up. The mission was to preserve the sophisticated visual style while drastically increasing responsiveness and rendering speeds.
Performance & Responsiveness
To push performance to the absolute limit and make the templates responsive, I combined several advanced After Effects techniques to optimize rendering speeds.
The Problem (Sluggish Render Times)
The initial templates caused timeline lag and slowed down the fast-paced news pipeline:
- Sluggish timeline playback and frame rendering lag
- Heavy composition stacks with excessive layer duplications
- Computationally heavy rendering pipelines inside Premiere Pro
- Hardware-intensive effect chains stalling rendering workflows
The Solution (Responsive MOGRTs)
A complete architectural re-engineering prioritizing real-time responsiveness:
- Text Animators: Replaced heavy layer stacks with highly efficient native text animators.
- Advanced Expressions: Re-wrote automated logic to minimize computational overhead in Premiere Pro.
- Optimized Effect Chains: Swapped hardware-intensive effects for lighter, rendering-optimized combinations.
- Lag-Free Editing: Created an incredibly snappy, responsive toolkit for daily content production.
3-in-1 Multi-Brand Controller
To maximize efficiency, I integrated a smart multi-brand architecture into the main templates. Instead of forcing editors to switch between different project files for different platforms, I built a master control system directly into the Premiere Pro Essential Graphics panel.
As shown in the demonstration, with a single dropdown or checkbox menu, editors can instantly switch between 3 different color schemes and corporate logos, allowing one single template to dynamically adapt to three distinct media channels.
Results & Real-World Impact
The final deliverables provided the client with a scalable, bulletproof system. The internal editing team was able to immediately adopt the templates into their daily pipeline, streamline their post-production speed, and easily maintain the network's high production standards.
